Dr Spoto is a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 40 years’ experience in General Psychiatry in the UK and abroad and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Dr Spoto trained as a Psychiatrist in Milan ( Italy ) and upon moving to the UK in 1976 he held training posts at the Royal Free Hospital, the Tavistock Clinic and University College Hospital where he was a Senior Registrar and Hon Clinical Lecturer.
 
On 1.10.90 he was appointed a Consultant Psychiatrist by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust where he held special responsibility for Psychotherapy The new position was established with support from St George’s Hospital Medical School
 
On 11.10.17. Dr Spoto left the NHS to join the Priory Hospital Roehampton where he was a Visiting Consultant for a short period and has been a Consultant in independent practice since 1.06.19, specialising in Second Opinions.
 
Dr Spoto has an established medico-legal practice regularly taking instructions as an Expert Witness in a variety of jurisdictions including Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence and Immigration where he takes instructions on a regular basis from the Government Legal Department and from Claimants
 
Dr Spoto also takes instructions in Crime under the Legal Aid system where he occasionally undertakes work on a “Pro-Bono” basis.
 
Dr Spoto’s practice is especially concerned with the examination of complex cases and his Claimant / Defendant Ratio is 70/30 %,
 
Dr Spoto has been a Medical Member of the 1st Tier Tribunal (Mental Health) between 1995 – 2021 when he left the Judiciary duo to reaching Mandatory Retirement Age

Dr Spoto has, for many years, held senior roles in Medical Education serving the Royal College of Psychiatrists as an Examiner for the Pt II MRCPsych Examination and as Scheme Tutor for a large SHO rotation in West Sussex known as the Arun Valley Rotation originally under St George’s Hospital

Other College roles have included Deputy Regional Adviser for Kent Surrey and Sussex Region ( KSS ) and Regional Representative ( Community Psychiatry )  for the KSS. Region
             
                                                                   
Dr Spoto’s clinical interests are in the care of the seriously mentally ill where in the past he has had leading roles in a number of innovative projects and more recently severe stress related Disorders including complex PTSD
                                                 

Dr Spoto's research interest was initially in the field of Psychopharmacology but as early as 1972 he became interested in the relationship between Pharmacotherapy and Psychotherapy, at the time a completely new area of scientific interest.

 His current research interest is in the field of Reflective Practice and its application to Medicolegal Education and Medical Education generally.

Dr Spoto joined the Expert Witness Institute as a Member in 2023 He is a Member of the Independent Doctors Federation (IDF) where he is a Member of the Education Committee and he is a Member of Council of the Medico-legal Society ( London ).
 
As an Expert Witness Dr Spoto is actively engaged in the Royal College of Psychiatrists Multi Source Assessment for Expert Psychiatric Witnesses (MAEP) ‎ where he registered as a Fellow in 2022.

Dr Spoto retains accreditation with the GMC as an Educational Supervisor for CT and ST Training in Psychiatry, and he is a Founder Member of the Academy of Medical Educators where he is also a Fellow.

Dr Spoto undergoes regular yearly Appraisal with IDF and holds a Certificate of Good Standing for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) issued by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Spoto's Revalidation date is 28.11.29

In 2022 Dr Spoto founded GS Medical Group with the aim of expanding his medicolegal practice to include an educational element. The Group, which is supported by a website aims to provide innovative practice based educational services. aimed especially at less experience Experts and higher psychiatric trainees
